Environmental Assessment of Bottom-grown Mussels in Ireland Ireland
Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) - Project Dates:
April 2007 - August 2007
Description of Project:
As part of all Ireland cross border review of the bottom-grown mussel industry, the purpose of this environmental assessment is to explore opportunities and make recommendations to improve and best utilise knowledge of the natural environment and to optimize environmental performance of the bottom grown mussel sector within the current legislative, economic, operational, technological and knowledge context.
Poseidon identified and described the environmental baseline, key impacts related to the aspect, and made recommendations to optimise environmental sustainability. Interactions between life cycle stages and aspects were considered. Examples of recommendations included building awareness, improved monitoring etc. The study was carried out using a combination of desk study literature review, feedback from the consultative process, consultation with relevant experts and examination of best practice elsewhere.
