A blueprint for sustainable tropical shrimp trawl fisheries Global

WWF - Project Dates:
September 2009 - October 2009

Description of Project:
Tropical shrimp trawling (TST) is widely accepted as one of the most unselective and damaging fishing practices in the world. Despite this there are some examples of what are currently considered well managed TST fisheries. However before considering incentives or opportunities to drive sustainability of selective tropical shrimp trawl fisheries, it is obviously critical to define the parameters of sustainability for these types of fisheries.

Services Provided:
Poseidon prepared a report to:
1. Indicate, in detail, the parameters of TST fisheries impacts which must be maintained in order to achieve sustainability;
2. Identify the major constraints to more sustainable TST management;
3. Identify what is the business case for TST operators to adopt better practices.

In addition the report considered
a. What public sector management measures are necessary for sustainability?
b. What is the role of market based mechanisms to drive sustainability?
c. Better management practices that have been developed/are being developed by different parties
d. Potential management alternatives to current bad practices
e. What are the available or potential financing mechanisms to help a TST fishery achieve sustainability?
f. Rrecommendations on how sustainable management can actually be implemented.
