Assisting developing countries in complying with the implementation of Regulation 1005/2008 on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing ACP countries

DG MARE Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (European Commission) - Project Dates:
October 2010 - October 2011

Description of Project:
The objective of this project was to accompany developing countries in their efforts to comply with the EU IUU Regulation (1005/2008). The aim of the Regulation is to stop illegal trade flows from third countries to the EU, through focusing the attention of authorities on efficient control of fisheries through validation of catch certificates to identify situations at risk.

Services Provided:
The Poseidon consultants (sub-contracted by GOPA) worked closely with the private sector and with the competent authorities issuing catch certificates in Suriname, Guyana, Bangladesh, Thailand, PNG, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Vanuatu and the Marshall Islands, to identify weakness in existing catch certification systems(administrative issues, verifications, etc). Fisheries management systems, legislation, port state duties, flag state duties etc were all reviewed for the implications for IUU reductions, with appropriate recommendations being made.
