Poverty alleviation and small-scale fisheries
International Seafood Trade - Supporting Sustainable Livelihoods Among Poor Aquatic Resource Users in Asia
EC PREP - Project Dates:
Description of Project:
Given the growing recognition of the significance of fisheries trade/poverty linkages and the need for a better understanding of the issues, the project explored pro-poor trade mechanisms.
In particular the project focused on exports of shrimp from Vietnam to the UK and the Netherlands, and of marine ornamentals from Philippines and Indonesia to the UK and France. The policy, financial and legislative context in which trade operates were considered, and consultation throughout supply chains was undertaken to identify to generate momentum around the projectís suggestions. (In association with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) and the STREAM Initiative).
