EU dependency on fisheries Europe

DG Fisheries (European Commission) - Project Dates:

Description of Project:
With Axis 4 of the EFF, The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) widened its scope to address socio-economic development of local and regional communities depending on the fisheries sector. Within this approach, the emphasis is on the impact and the added value of the sector (catching sector, processing, marketing, support services, and aquaculture). The Commission required data on the socio-economic situation of coastal communities, in particular those dependent on the fisheries sector, to explore and understand better issues of change and adaptability, reasons for success of some regions over others, etc.

Services Provided:
24 case studies were completed across the EU using a standardised methodology to collect and analyse both quantitative and qualitative information. The study addressed two principal aims: 1. Carrying out case studies within different types of coastal communities with the focus on the importance and future prospects of fisheries, processing and other maritime activities, from the social and economic points of view. 2. Supporting the discussion about the future CFP, in particular as regards future financial support. Poseidon worked as part of a consortium on this project and had responsibilities for overal study methodology and analysis, as well for conducting specific case studies in Scotland, Ireland, England and Germany.
