Strategic Review of Maltese Fisheries Sector Malta

Ministry for Resources & Rural Affairs  - Project Dates:
July 2012 - August 2012

Description of Project:
As part of a wider review of agriculture and fisheries production in Malta, the Ministry for Resources & Rural Affairs (MRRA) required a review of the Maltese fisheries sector in order so it may formulate its future strategies for sustainable fisheries development and management. Therefore the objective of this work was to provide sufficient information for the Ministry to formulate these strategies. This information will need to reflect the wider governance environment (e.g. the reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy), the new European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) as well as developments in the global seafood market.

Services Provided:
Poseidon provided the main technical inputs into the project, including: 1. Extensive stakeholder consultations with the industry, management and other coastal users in both Maltese capture fisheries and aquaculture 2. Development of a preliminary Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats Analysis (SWOT)analysis 3. Presentation of this SWOT analysis at an public workshop and open discussion on the analysis. 4. Presentation of a report to MARA, providing the finalised SWOT as well as recommendations for fisheries sector strategy development as a result of its findings.
